To face and overcome a challenge are the next steps on our journey. I used to think that this was the hardest thing to do. Over the last couple of years I have discovered that the hardest part is actually the deciding to face the challenge…whatever that may be for you. This is the part of the hero’s journey that for me, my fears take over and send me running back in the other direction. After all deep down I don’t know if I really want to slay a dragon. Most of the dragons that we face are the big, scary parts of ourselves that we are so afraid to admit are a part of us…..the shadow self. Facing our shadows would mean admitting that they exist and facing the fact that , Oh crap…I’m not perfect !
Funny thing about most of my challenges is that when I do finally get up the courage to face them, they really aren’t so scary. They just seemed that way from under the bed where I was hiding. When I actually walked out into the light of day and faced them most have been easy to overcome. I have found at least for me that it’s not in slaying the dragon and getting rid of it, but taming it and making it part of my life that I love and respect that I find the most healing.
This is by far the most rewarding part of our journey’s. Change is something that we are all afraid of. We go to great lengths in many parts of our lives to be miserable and stay that way, just to avoid change. It can be a little painful, and sometimes we get wounded along the way, but in the end we find a beauty in things that we never knew existed. Embrace the changes that come into your life. Face them with courage, compassion, and love and there is nothing that you can’t overcome.
